Mass Street Music’s Video Recording Gear

From Mass Street Music luthier Josh Baldridge:

I have been working with Jesse on the recent Mass Street Music videos, and it has been a real learning experience for us all. From deciding which items to feature, to increasing the quality of each video – but it seems like all the work has been well worth it. We are now using two Canon EOS Rebel T2i cameras in order to give you a variety of viewpoints. Anne has been using one of these for several years to shoot the beautiful photos you see on our website, but the video camera capabilities are incredible (especially when someone like Jesse, who has a great eye for video, is operating it!)

Our audio setup has changed drastically over the past few months. We started with an on-board mic and quickly realized that things needed improvement. So here is a rundown of the hardware we now love using:

Rode NT1-A microphone

This Rode NT1-A delivers true sound!

Rode NT1-A
We use this Rhode NT1-A for our acoustic videos and have been floored with how realistically it captures both the guitar and vocal. Check out its prominent role in Jim’s Collings CJ Custom video here.

Sennheister e906 Microphone
For electric guitars and amps, this Sennheiser has been perfect for close micing the amp and getting an accurate reproduction of what you hear coming from the speaker. You can spot this one in Eric’s Fralin 7.5 & 8.5 video here and John’s Collings 290 Electric video  here.

The Avid Mobile Pre recording interface – so easy to use!

M-Audio Avid Mobile Pre
Believe it or not we are plugging all these great mics into an Avid Mobil Pre recording interface…and that’s it! This thing is so easy to use and at $150 it even comes with a copy of ProTools SE. At first I was worried that ProTools would be a little overwhelming, but after a couple of sessions those worries disappeared. It’s amazing to think that quality recording has become so easy and inexpensive for any of us to do.

To edit this all together Jesse uses Edius 6 software, a great program for quick, real time editing in a variety of formats. Look for more videos coming soon.
