This Just In! Guitars that won’t break the bank

If you’ve visited Mass St Music at our store or online, you already know we’ve got a great selection of boutique, specialty¬† guitars and amps — but we also carry plenty of lower priced guitars that are great for beginners or those just wanting to give something different a go. We just received a new shipment and thought we’d give you a look at some of the best, low priced acoustics and electrics we have right now. We’ve chosen all of these guitars very carefully to ensure they have a good sound, and are very playable, particular for those just starting out. And as always, we give a full free set up on any new guitar to make sure it’s playing perfectly.

Yamaha FS720S acoustic guitar

The Yamaha FS720S acoustic- great sound with a slimmer body and a solid Sitka Spruce top.

Acoustic full size dread players will appreciate the solid Spruce top on the Fender CD-140S ($200) and the Yamaha FG700s ($199)– both deliver good volume and nice tone and are great as a second guitar, one to take camping, or for a beginner looking for a full sized instrument. Folks that enjoy a slightly slimmer body style, and bigger kids will appreciate the Yamaha FS720S ($279) and the cool FA-125S Folk Acoustic Pack ($229 with tuner, gig bag and other goodies)¬† — both of these are super comfortable players that require less of a reach than a dread, and feature solid Sitka Spruce tops for a rich sound.

Yamaha JR1 3/4 Acoustic guitar

This Yamaha JR1 3/4 Acoustic is no toy - perfect for little pickers

How about the little ones that really want to play? We really love this Yamaha JR1 3/4¬† Acoustic ($139). Too often ‘kids guitars’ are not really playable and the young player gives up. This JR1 is very playable, sounds great and we’ve even found some ‘big kids’ who like to take it camping. If you’re looking for something with a little more panache and that Martin mojo, the Martin LX1 Little Martin ($299) is a wonderful choice for smaller hands or travel too.

Little rockers should check out the Ibanez Mikro ($109) – this is a total mini shredder with dual humbuckers and it sounds great. Add in the effects-laden Fender Mustang I Amp ($99) or Line 6 Spider IV Amp ($99) and you’ve got all you need for summer fun – these inexpensive amps deliver on sound and offer incredible effects too. Great for practice, easy to use and a whole lot of fun.

Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar HH electric guitar

One of Squier's coolest, the Vintage Modified Jaguar HH!

The Squier Fat Strat HSS ($179) is a killer guitar for those starting out and looking for a classic with a twist. This is Fender’s lower priced version of the classic strat, with two single coil pickups and one bold humbucker as well, making for one of the most versatile starter electrics out there, which is why we love this one. Squier’s also really impressed us with their ‘Classic Vibe’ and vintage lines the past couple of years and this Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar HH ($300) is one of their best. Seriously cool with two zebra humbuckers giving the player a lot of variety – and love that totally classic fiesta red finish too.

If you’re not after a guitar, but are still looking for some musical fun this summer, check out our selection of Kala Ukes…we love these – they’re well made, sound fantastic, are so easy to learn to play and are seriously fun. Whatever you do, play something — it’s summer!
