Blind Boy Chocolate & the Milk Sheiks drop by Mass St Music

Blind Boy Chocolate and the Milk Sheiks rocking the acoustic room at Mass St Music

Early Tuesday morning, I walked through the acoustic room and found a fellow (Nick the Squirrel I later found out) trying out a 1920 Gibson Junior A mando we just got in.  Accompanying him was a real surprise – a buddy of his playing a saw, with a bow.  Turns out these gentlemen, along with two buddies make up Blind Boy Chocolate and the Milk Sheiks – a jug band of sorts that was just passing through Lawrence on their way heading to Montana, Washington state and Oregon. They came all the way from Asheville, North Carolina. Joined by their cohorts on stand up bass and a vintage Style O guitar from the store, they soon were all going at it, playing some great tunes –  not quite bluegrass, not quite hokum, but some beautiful conglomeration. If you happen to see them in your hometown, ask them to play a song or two for you. We hope to see them back this way again sometime. You can check out their tunes for yourself on their facebook or myspace page here.
