Mike Black’s Mandolins

Mike Black with his two latest mandolins

Mike Black with his two latest beautiful creations!

Our good friend Mike Black, who you also might know from his band Three Bean Salad, has been making some very cool mandos (check out the piccolo mando he made for his son here). He stopped by Mass St Music the other day to let us have a gander at his latest creations – these are already sold folks. Mike has been crafting mandos for a while now and actually apprenticed with Summit’s Paul Schneider – no small pedigree there my friends. He crafted 3 last year and these 2 shown here are his first of 2011. Mike says he’s based his designs largely on the old Gibson Snakeheads. These are both made from Engelman Spruce for the tops and Maple for the back and sides. He’s also got a virzi in the darker mando, which Loar used on F-hole mandos,  but it particularly sounds great with the oval hole.  Beautiful mandos Mike! Make some more!
